Simply put, most of the animals are food for humans. There are some non-edible species as they are toxic or too dangerous. A painful truth is that venison, shrimp, fish, reptiles and even insects are very tasty and nutritious but we can not harvest them as simple as picking mushrooms. Many times we have to look “food” to go back and forth before our eyes, but do not know how to catch them. If you have ever caught one chicken escaping from their pens or tried to catch one eel with your bare hands, you will know even that duty is not easy at all.
And that is all what I want to talk about in this section: Hunting.
In normal conditions, hunting is a very interesting thing. After the breeding season, the animals often proliferate in large numbers (rabbit, deer, goats, etc.). At this time, the young pups still have little experience in life, so are easy for you to catch. They will be the supply of food for you in a whole season. So the hunting capability would salvage your food problems even your group’s in these difficult times.
Briefly speaking, what makeup hunting capability? Three basic elements of a skilled hunter are: experiences, reactions and techniques. In fact, I would like to add one more element that is capability of killing It seems a bit abstract, but obviously you know what I’m talking about, right?
You could not bear to pull the trigger or gouge the neck of a poor animal when looking into its eyes? This demonstrates that you are very benevolent. But in some special cases, this is not good and you will regret very much when your family or your group are waiting for you.
In the following parts, I will go right to the skills of a hunter.
Identifying the prey
A professional hunter would never hunt in all places to find with a psychological blessing. It is just exhausting and time-consuming. There is one expression: if we know the enemy, we will win one hundred victories in one hundred battles. You know this area is inhabited by these animals, the other area is a bird’s nest or the route to go eating and drinking of some mammals. It is so simple like that, but your hunt will be a lot easier.
The ability to identify prey is not difficult to train. You will draw experiences for yourselves after a few times hunting. Even when you lose, remember that for the next time.
In general, this is a very complex problem, but also very interesting for you to explore over a period of wandering in the wilderness. For example, all mammals have teeth, including squirrels or rats, and of course they fully know how to bite to defend themselves. Even if a squirrel bites you, it can cause serious injuries if you are infected. For several species of mammals with high motherhood, they ran at the first sight of you, but if you catch their offspring, they will turn back to attack you at any cost. Or when being cornered, even gentle animals like deer and chamois can also become very aggressive. These species also live in herds and cooperate very effectively. So each event will enrich your knowledge and experience in a way that no book can. Keep in mind that for the next time.
Detecting the prey
For the detection of prey to catch, to set traps or to avoid, I want to mention the ability to “read” the traces left by an animal: footprints, crushed vegetation, soil disturbance, feces, hair, urine (very often, some species also have a habit of marking territory with urine), odor and noise, etc. Like above mentioned, building up your own knowledge about the animals around you is necessary because there is no book to teach you about this.
Approaching the prey
This is a difficult step requires much more technical things, such as moving, deceiving, hiding and camouflaging. However, there is also plenty of advice in this regard.
– To approach the prey, of course we cannot let them to notice you. The best way is hiding, immersing yourself in nature from color to aroma.
– Your clothing should have the same color with the surrounding landscape. Do not carrying things capable of reflecting sunlight such as watches, glasses, etc.
– Do not carry items capable of causing noise such as keys.
– The animals often have a very strong sense of smell, even stronger than their vision so our smell is easy to be detected. They can smell the humans surrounding the trapping areas so if can, we use mud and vegetation to deodorize that smell. We can also use the urine of the animals we caught to get the other of their species into a trap.
– Do not use perfume and tobacco when hunting.
– Approach the prey from below wind direction and deodorize the body smell with thick mud.
– If professional enough, mimic the cry of some animals to lure others into a trap, or into your perspective. But it is not highly recommended because if you mimic do not similar to the cry of the animal, it is totally counterproductive.
Suppressing the prey
For those who are unfamiliar with the killing of an animal, they are likely to make their hands shake and miss his animals in just a few meters. And there’s no advice at all. Time will teach you to keep calm.
If using a gun, shoot at the head, neck and shoulder blade to paralyze the animal on site.
If using crossbows, you should poison them if you want to hunt big animals. Using this type of arrow requires you to be careful and shoot at the position nearest to the animal’s heart so that the toxicity develops faster.
In case of a big animal, if you cannot kill them immediately, but just do them wounded and fled, then you can trace to find it out by following their blood.
